Moscow, 1930s. A popular playwright is accused of anti-Sovietism: his play is canceled and he is expelled from the Union of Writers. At a bad moment in his life, he meets the beautiful Margarita, who is deeply unhappy in marriage, and begins a new novel, the heroes of which are people from his neighborhood, including the mystical character Woland, copied from a foreigner he knows.

The near future. Childbirth is strictly controlled by the state, and not every couple can obtain permission to become parents. Scientists Mia and Arjan undergo a special state assessment procedure: inspector Virginia comes to visit them for a week to conduct a series of psychological tests and checks, including role-playing games that simulate raising a child.
