1949, Santa Rosa, California. Ed Crane, a quiet barber, leisurely cuts his customers' hair in his salon, while his wife has an affair with her boss, Big Dave, a haberdasher who has recently saved up enough money to open a new store. Suddenly, Ed has the opportunity to get rich in the emerging dry cleaning business. To raise capital, he blackmails Big Dave, realizing that he can only achieve success in life by resorting to extreme measures.
