"54" was New York City's most popular club. It was impossible to just stumble in by accident. But once you were there, you wanted to stay forever. This is the story of that famous hotspot and the people who frequented it. It’s about an ordinary guy who miraculously ended up there; about drugs and casual sex; about attempts to make dreams come true at any cost. It’s about the dark side of fame, about love and disappointment, and about the consequences of it all.

Los Angeles Police Department, April 1992. A few days before the acquittal of four white police officers accused of brutally beating Rodney King, a Black man, and the ensuing riots in Los Angeles. Amid this tense, racially charged atmosphere, an elite unit of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Special Investigations Division is tasked with solving the murders.

The film begins with the main character, Alphonse, entering the subway at night and striking up a conversation with a stranger, with whom he waits for the train on an empty platform. The stranger turns out to be an accountant. Alphonse shares his fantasies about murder with the accountant, pulls a switchblade from his pocket, and offers it to him. The accountant refuses the knife and places it on a bench, but by the time they realize what has happened, the knife is no longer on the bench. A train pulls in; the accountant jumps on and leaves, while Alphonse remains on the platform...
