Japan, XVI century. The aging ruler Hidetora announces the division of his domains among his three sons. Deceived by the false assurances of loyalty of his two eldest sons, Hidetora banishes the youngest, who dares to claim that his father's decision will bring doom to their entire family. The ruler, victimized by a treacherous betrayal, loses his mind, and a ruthless fratricidal war breaks out between his heirs.
