The 1870s, the Wild West. A train is robbed, and along with the gold, a samurai sword intended as a gift for the president is stolen. The samurai sets out to find the sword alongside one of the robbers, who has his own reasons for seeking revenge. The robber had withheld his share of the loot and nearly killed the samurai himself.
The story takes place in the summer of 1979 in Santa Barbara. Dorothea Fields is raising her teenage son, Jamie, and trying to give him the very best. She draws her maternal wisdom from her relationships with two women: Abby, a photographer immersed in the punk movement who has returned to her family home, and Julie, a smart, mischievous 16-year-old and a friend of Dorothea’s son.
