Selma, an immigrant from Czechoslovakia who loves musicals, works at a factory and lives with her son in a rented trailer. Selma has a serious illness that is causing her to lose her sight. Her son is also suffering from the same condition. Selma hides her illness and tries to work despite her blindness to earn the money needed for her son’s treatment.
Tetsuro, a boy from a small town, finds himself in the heart of an ultra-modern city, where the “Megapolis” planetary station is located. The Galactic Express 999 departs from this station, and Tetsuro tries to board it. He steals a ticket, and a police force of mechanical people tries to catch him. Unexpectedly, Tetsuro is rescued by the mysterious Meitel, with whom he will travel on the express. The boy wants to take revenge on the robots—specifically Count Mecca—for the death of his mother, who was killed during a manhunt.

The doctors find nothing unusual wrong with her, and after escaping from the hospital, Margaret suddenly realizes that she needs to find Kellner.
