Japan, XVI century. The aging ruler Hidetora announces the division of his domains among his three sons. Deceived by the false assurances of loyalty of his two eldest sons, Hidetora banishes the youngest, who dares to claim that his father's decision will bring doom to their entire family. In his film adaptation of the Marquis de Sade’s novel, Pasolini transposes the action to 1944–45, to the fascist “Republic of Salò” in northern Italy, where a group of high-society figures led by a prince humiliates, mocks, torments, and tortures young men and women gathered to satisfy the perverted elite, who sense their own impending doom. This ordeal lasts four months. For the adults, it is a final opportunity to satisfy their base instincts; for the young people, it is retribution for their youth and their desire to live.
