FBI agent Wesley Doyle is leading the investigation of a Texas serial killer known as the Hand of God. One night, a young man named Fenton Meiks comes to Doyle and claims to know the killer well. It's his younger brother Adam, and all of his crimes are just a small part of a long story. When Fenton and Adam were children, after the death of their mother, their father claims that an angel appeared to him and told him to kill demons - normal looking people who bring evil to the world.

Upon returning from space, a rocket launched by a group of scientists led by Professor Bernard Quatermass crashes in the English countryside. Of the rocket's three crew members, two disappear, while the third turns into a hideous mutant who begins to destroy people and animals, feeding their flesh further monstrous transformations of his body. 1932. After many years away, twins Smok and Stack return to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta. They fought in the trenches of World War I and then became gangsters in Chicago. The brothers buy a piece of land with farm buildings from a white racist in order to open a music bar for plantation workers. The highlight of the opening is the preacher's son, to whom the twins once gave a guitar, and who plays the blues so well that he attracts the attention of an Irish vampire who happens to be nearby.
