Dr. Treves finds Merrick in a "freak show." His appearance is so horrifying that he has to wear a roomy garment so that no one will see his frightening growths all over his body. Taking Merrick to the hospital after another beating by his master, Treves is surprised to find in him a man intellectually advanced and spiritual. Professional interest is replaced by compassion, the phenomenon becomes fashionable in high society, the Queen herself blesses to leave him in the hospital forever.

After a nervous breakdown leading to bipolar disorder and a year in a psychiatric institution, Tun returns from China to Hong Kong to his father.
