Compton, 1988. Richard Williams, father of five daughters, has long ago drawn up a detailed plan for his girls' futures and is doggedly pursuing it, with eight-year-old Venus and seven-year-old Serena set to become tennis stars. Although Richard and his wife Brandi have little understanding of professional tennis training, they have been training their daughters themselves and have been doing their best to teach them technique. World-renowned coach Paul Cohen, who works with Pete Sampras and John McEnroe, agrees to free lessons, but only for Venus. Then Richard records the lessons on camera, and Brandy starts coaching Serena based on them.
