Mid-19th century. Mute Ada, along with her young daughter and her beloved piano, leaves her native Scotland and moves to the other side of the world, to New Zealand, where her future husband Stuart is waiting for her. He refuses to deliver the piano to the house, which is left abandoned on the beach. Ada, who has not spoken since she was six years old, nevertheless shows her husband the depth of her anger. Stuart's savage-looking neighbor Baines brings the piano that replaces Ada's voice to his home. She can have it back, but only if she comes to Baines' house and gives him music lessons - by the number of keys. These lessons will lead them into an abyss of fatal passions.....
